2012 Irish Derby Guide

The 2011 Irish Derby proved to be yet another thrilling race, which culminated in Treasure Beach winning Aiden O'Brien his sixth consecutive Irish Derby. The Queen's horse, Carlton House, once again failed to justify its status as a race favourite, finishing in a disappointing fourth place.

Elsewhere, Lilbourne Lad was victorious in the Railway Stakes and Invincible Ash won the Sapphire Stakes.

Irish Derby Race Information

The Irish Derby is a Group One open to three year old thoroughbred colts and fillies, although it is not too often that a filly will run. The race is run over 1½ miles at the Curragh Racecourse and takes place on the final day of the three day Irish Derby Festival.

Over the years the Irish Derby has witnessed many momentous races and has a fantastic list of Irish Derby Past Winners, some of whom will be well known to the punters such as the great Nijinsky, who won the race in 1970 before famously going onto win the English Triple Crown, all in 1970. Shergar, whose life was ended so tragically after falling victim to a high profile kidnapping won the race in 1981, and more recently Hurricane Run won the race in 2005 and then went on to glory in the Irish Derby Legends. The 2012 race should produce another star performer.

Irish Derby Betting

Apart from the Irish Grand National, The Irish Derby is the next biggest betting race where tradition has it that virtually every household have some sort of bet on the race. This site however has various pages that will assist the punter in hopefully selecting the winner.

As it should be, the Irish Derby has been dominated by Irish horses over recent years, winning 14 of the last 17 renewals. An English trained colt has not won the race since Balanchine did so in 1994.

It was another big year for the Irish in 2011 with Aiden O'Brien once again dominating the race, with his horses - Treasure Beach, Seville and Memphis Tennessee - finishing in the top 3.#
